This photograph depicts a close medial view of the swollen left leg of a 15-month-old white male patient with edema and a cutaneous rash, diagnosed as kwashiorkor, a severe form of dietary protein deficiency. Initial serum protein levels measured 3.8 g/dL total protein, with albumin at 1.7 g/dL and globulin at 2.1 g/dL. See PHIL 23680 through 23683 for additional views of this patient’s condition.
