Caption:
This photograph depicts a posterior view of the scalp of a 5½-year-old child, highlighting a swollen, erythematous area consistent with an abscess. This abscess subsequently resulted in meningitis and was caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Enterobacter aerogenes (formerly Aerobacter aerogenes). The organisms are believed to have migrated intracranially from the abscess via an occipital sinus tract associated with a dermoid cyst of the cerebellum. E. aerogenes was cultured from both the abscess and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
