Under 40X magnification, this photomicrograph of human lung tissue depicts histopathologic changes associated with varicella pneumonia caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). At this magnification, there is disruption of normal alveolar architecture, with fibrinous exudate filling and replacing alveolar spaces.
