Under 50X magnification, this photomicrograph of human lung tissue in a case of varicella pneumonia depicts histopathologic changes caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). There is loss of normal alveolar architecture with areas of focal necrosis, consolidation, and a marked mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate.
