Under 40X magnification, this photomicrograph of human skin tissue depicts histopathologic changes associated with varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). There is formation of an intraepidermal blister with accompanying acantholysis. At this magnification, cytopathic changes within individual keratinocytes, including intranuclear and intracytoplasmic viral inclusions, are not readily visualized.
