Caption:
Under 40X magnification, this photomicrograph of human skin tissue depicts histopathologic changes associated with varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). There is a ruptured intraepidermal blister with accompanying acantholysis, with separation of the blister roof from the underlying dermis. At this magnification, cytopathic changes within individual keratinocytes, including intranuclear and intracytoplasmic viral inclusions, are not readily visualized.
