Caption:
This image shows a close frontal view of a bromothymol blue (BTB) agar culture plate inoculated with Neisseria meningitidis group B, types 1 and 2, from a California culture mixture. Incubation produced numerous small yellow and light green colonies. Oxidative metabolism of carbohydrate in the medium lowered the pH, causing the BTB indicator to turn yellow, while colonies at neutral pH remain green. See PHIL 23725 for another view of these N. meningitidis colonies.
