This image demonstrates the results of a Cryptococcus neoformans urease test. The tube on the left shows a positive reaction, indicated by a color change from yellow to pink due to an increase in pH, as detected by the indicator phenol red. This alkalinization results from the organism’s ability to hydrolyze urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The tube on the right remains negative, with no color change, indicating that urea was not hydrolyzed.
