Caption:
This illustration highlights morphologic characteristics of infertile Ascaris sp. ova. Infertile ova are typically elongated and larger than fertile eggs, measuring up to approximately 90 µm in length. Their shell is thinner, and the mammillated layer is variable, ranging from prominent protuberances to nearly absent; in some cases, the outer layer may be entirely lacking, as seen in the four ova at the bottom of the image. Infertile ova contain a mass of refractile granules.
