This illustration highlights some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by oocysts of two genera contained within the sub-class of protozoa known as Coccidia. The two genera included here, were Isospora above, and Eimeria below. Oocyst development begins with a sporoblast that divides in a process referred to as sporulation, forming sporocysts, which develop into infective sporozoites. In the case of Isospora, oocyst development begins with a single sporoblast, which divides forming two sporocysts, which further subdivide leading to the formation of eight sporozoites within each sporocyst. In the case of Eimeria, the initial sporoblast gives rise to four sporocysts, which further subdivide into two infective sporozoites per sporocyst. This oocyst configuration is often used to identify the organism as to its genus.
