Captured in 1965, this photograph depicts a close lateral view of the left middle finger following envenomation by a copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix. The wound is fresh and oozing blood, with early swelling of the distal fingertip and subcutaneous hemorrhage imparting a violaceous discoloration to the bite site. This image was donated by and is credited to Shermon A. Minton, Jr., M.D., Department of Microbiology, Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, Indiana.
