Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph of a Brown and Brenn-stained tissue specimen shows numerous darkly stained Gram-positive bacteria. In this staining method, Gram-positive organisms retain the crystal violet–iodine complex within their thick peptidoglycan cell walls, appearing dark blue to purple.
