This image depicts a frontal view of the head, neck, and upper chest of a patient who had been under care at the Public Health Service (PHS) Leprosarium Hospital in Carville, Louisiana. The photograph highlights multiple cutaneous lesions associated with lepromatous leprosy, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. Note the thickening of the forehead, roughened skin over the right side of the face, asymmetrical swelling of the lips, and a saddleback nasal bridge.
