Caption:
This image depicts an anterior view of a 14-year-old boy’s face. The patient had presented two years earlier (see PHIL 24518) with diffuse lepromatous leprosy, involving the cheeks, periorbital areas, forehead, lips, and chin. At that time, the skin in these regions appeared thickened and roughened, resulting in facial asymmetry. Leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. At this stage of the disease, the symptoms have become quiescent, with a reduction in facial swelling and a return toward normal skin appearance compared to PHIL 24518.
