Caption:
This photomicrograph of a thin-film blood smear stained with Giemsa reveals the morphology of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes, including a male microgametocyte on the left and a female macrogametocyte in the upper right. Note the delicate remnant of the host red blood cell (RBC) membrane, known as Laveran’s bib, ballooning from each gametocyte.
