Caption:
This image depicts a frontal view of four slant culture tubes containing Lowenstein–Jensen growth medium inoculated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis samples. Tubes 1 and 2 were prepared using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) alone for sputum digestion and decontamination, whereas tubes 3 and 4 were processed using N-acetyl-L-cysteine–sodium hydroxide (Ac-Cyst). Note that NaOH alone resulted in no colony growth, whereas the Ac-Cyst method, which includes a mucolytic agent, yielded numerous M. tuberculosis colonies.
