From a superior view, this image shows a human brain affected by cladosporiosis, or cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, caused by the dematiaceous fungus Cladophialophora bantiana (formerly Cladosporium bantianum). Note the large abscess involving the parietofrontal region of the right cerebral hemisphere. A purulent subarachnoid exudate is also visible over the bilateral frontal lobes; a closer view is shown in PHIL 24693. See also PHIL 17664 and 24694 for images of the scalp demonstrating extension of the abscess, and PHIL 24695 and 24696 for views of the brain interior illustrating the extent of infection.
