From a superior view, this image shows a human brain affected by cladosporiosis, or cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, caused by the dematiaceous fungus Cladophialophora bantiana (formerly Cladosporium bantianum). A purulent subarachnoid exudate is visible over the bilateral frontal lobes. See PHIL 24692 for another view of the brain exterior showing an abscess involving the parietofrontal region of the right cerebral hemisphere. See also PHIL 17664 and 24694 for images of the scalp demonstrating extension of the abscess, and PHIL 24695 and 24696 for views of the brain interior illustrating the extent of infection.
