Caption:
This image shows a paramedian section of the human brain from the patient depicted in PHIL 17664, who succumbed to cladosporiosis, or cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, caused by the dematiaceous fungus Cladophialophora bantiana (formerly Cladosporium bantianum). The abscess is located primarily in the cortical region of the right parietofrontal area, although the infection involves much of the brain interior, as shown in PHIL 24695 through 24698, with areas of parenchymal purulence. See PHIL 24692 and 24693 for views of the brain exterior at autopsy, demonstrating the primary cerebral abscess and associated frontal subarachnoid infection.
