Caption:
This image shows a coronal section of the human brain at the level of the cerebral hemispheres from the patient depicted in PHIL 17664, who succumbed to cladosporiosis, or cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, caused by the dematiaceous fungus Cladophialophora bantiana (formerly Cladosporium bantianum). The primary abscess is located in the cortical region of the right parietofrontal area (PHIL 24692), although the infection involves much of the brain interior, as demonstrated in PHIL 24695 through 24698, with areas of parenchymal infection.
