On November 30, 2018, at 8:29am (Local), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Anchorage, Alaska. The quake lasted almost two minutes and was felt up to 400-miles outside of Anchorage.

Many of the CDC staff at the Artic Investigation Program (AIP) were already at work and others were on the roads heading into the office. Kathie Fazekas (Acting Administrative Lead and Safety Officer) was one of those already at her desk. As soon as she realized what was going on, she had staff shelter under their desks. Once the first shock wave ceased, she and the Physical Security Officer (Cliff Ivey) checked on staff. Staff received a quick “just-in-time” refresher training from Kathie and Cliff to review earthquake protocol. Next Kathie had Team Leads reach out to staff who had not reported in to check on their status. Cliff donned a hard-hat and safety vest and did a physical inspection of the building for damages.
