Caption:
Erosion of the coastline along North Carolina’s southern Outer Banks has been ongoing for decades. During particularly bad seasons, oceanfront homeowners would pile sandbags around their house to avoid the potential for collapse. The erosion upset the ecological environment as well, affecting many animal sanctuaries and sea turtle nests. In this 2017 photograph, the dunes had been rebuilt, and for the moment, all was calm.
