This photomicrograph shows a male (lower right) and female (lower left) straw itch mite, Pyemotes ventricosus. The enlarged abdomen of a gravid female is visible centrally, having become detached as an artifact. See PHIL 24929 for a view of a female mite with the distended abdomen intact. The male demonstrates a prominent dark intestinal mass.
