This 1963 illustration (modified after Kozar), entitled “The Occurrence of Trichinosis in Nature,” depicts the various hosts involved in the transmission of trichinosis, also known as trichinellosis. Roundworms of the genus Trichinella are maintained in both the domestic environment (left), involving animals such as pigs, dogs, and rats, and in the sylvatic (wild) environment (right), including wild pigs, coyotes, bears, and other wildlife species. Humans may become infected through consumption of infected meat derived from these animal reservoirs.
