Caption:
This illustration depicts a silhouette of a mosquito, that was in the process of obtaining its blood meal from its warm-blooded host. Having inserted its flexible, straw-like proboscis through the skin surface, and piercing an arteriole, the blood travels up the proboscis into the mouth. However, while obtaining the blood, microorganisms are traveling a route back through the proboscis (green arrow), and into the host’s blood supply, thereby, acting as a vector for a number of life-threatening disease, including Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, dengue, and malaria.
