Caption:
This photographic-illustrative composite depicts five tick species, comparing a soft tick of the genus Argas (family Argasidae) on the left with four hard ticks on the right: Dermacentor variabilis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma americanum, and Amblyomma maculatum, all members of the family Ixodidae. Unlike the hard ticks, the soft tick lacks a dorsal scutum. In the hard ticks, the mouthparts project anteriorly and are visible dorsally, whereas in the soft tick they are positioned ventrally and concealed beneath the anterior margin of the body.
