After treatment with the antifungal medication griseofulvin began, this image highlights therapeutic progress in restoring the dorsal skin surface and nails of this patient’s right hand toward a more normal appearance. The patient had a dermatophytosis (ringworm) infection caused by the fungus Trichophyton rubrum. See PHIL 25388 for the characteristic findings observed prior to treatment, including crusted skin overlying the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints and fingers, and eroded fingernails and nail beds consistent with onychomycosis.
