This photomicrograph of a rat liver tissue specimen, in the region surrounding a portal venule, highlights extramedullary hematopoiesis. The animal had been fed a high-fat diet and exposed to DDT since weaning. Also noted are numerous nucleated erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBCs).
