This photomicrograph of a rat liver tissue specimen, in the region surrounding a portal venule, highlights extramedullary hematopoiesis. The animal had been fed a high-fat diet and exposed to DDT since weaning. Also noted are numerous normoblasts, precursor cells of erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBCs). See PHIL 25920 and 25921 for two other views of this scenario.
