Captured during a fungal nutritional study, this image depicts a frontal view of two slant culture test tubes inoculated with the fungal organism Trichophyton megninii, designated strain 424. The growth medium in the tube on the left contains ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), while the tube on the right contains NH4NO3 supplemented with the essential amino acid histidine (His). Note that the tube lacking His shows little to no colonial growth, whereas the tube supplemented with His produces a cottony T. megninii colony.
