This illustration highlights the basic stages through which an insect passes as it matures after hatching from an egg, in this case a cockroach. Known as gradual, or incomplete metamorphosis, these insects do not pass through a pupal stage during development, but instead progress directly to adulthood. This form of metamorphosis is also referred to as hemimetabolism, or paurometabolism.
