This photograph shows a close posterior view of a seated patient’s back, demonstrating inflamed bite lesions caused by the straw itch mite, Pyemotes ventricosus. The image was captured 48 hours after initiation of treatment with the antihistamine Benadryl and the anti-inflammatory agent hydrocortisone. This case was documented in DeKalb County, Georgia, in June 1962. See PHIL 27348 for a view of the inflamed papular rash extending over the patient’s back.
