This photograph depicts a close view of two slant culture tubes, each containing Difco Casitone agar supplemented with starch. The cultures were used to help identify unidentified Actinomyces species by biochemical testing. Tube C was inoculated with strain X407, and Tube D with strain A601. Following incubation, Gram's iodine solution was added to each tube. Tubes retaining starch, indicating an inability to hydrolyze starch, stained dark purple. The organisms in Tube C were able to hydrolyze starch (hydrolysis positive), while those in Tube D were unable to hydrolyze starch (hydrolysis negative).
