This image presents the results of a biochemical test, known as a decarboxylase reaction, used to determine whether an unidentified member of the bacterial family Enterobacteriaceae is present in the specimen. This test assesses whether a bacterium can decarboxylate amino acids, in this case lysine (L), arginine (A), and ornithine (O). A positive reaction indicates that the organism produces decarboxylase enzymes, facilitating amino acid decarboxylation and the formation of amines, which increase the pH of the growth medium and cause the pH indicator to change color from yellow to purple.
