This image depicts a montage of two fundoscopic views of various patients’ right retinas, also referred to eyegrounds, revealing some of the pathologic changes caused by the hereditary disease sickle cell anemia. The top image shows an eyeground from a patient with the genetic condition known as sickle cell trait (SCT), whereupon this person received a hemoglobin “s” gene from one parent, and a normal “A” hemoglobin gene from the other parent. The bottom image shows the retina in a patient with the SC genotype, or sickle cell-hemoglobin C.
