Caption:
Captured during the necropsy of a Sigmodon sp. cotton rat. Note how the liver had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis larvae, or oncospheres, and produced numerous multi-chambered, or multilocular, thin-walled, alveolar-type hydatid cysts. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis. This image was created 45-days after having been infected.
