Caption:
This photograph depicted the lungs and heart of a cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus. The lungs had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis. The infection produced numerous multi-chambered, or multilocular, thin-walled, alveolar-type hydatid cysts. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis. These lungs had been infected 20-days prior to the creation of this image.
