This photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) official Charles C. Shepard, M.D., who was internationally recognized for his work in leprosy and Legionnaires’ disease research. Dr. Shepard served as chief of the Leprosy and Rickettsial Branch at the CDC for more than 30 years. A leading expert on leprosy, he succeeded in 1960 in propagating Mycobacterium leprae in laboratory animals, enabling more rapid evaluation of treatments and preventive measures. In 1977, Dr. Shepard and Dr. Joseph E. McDade were the two CDC researchers who isolated the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, Legionella pneumophila.
