This historic image was captured in 1959 in Raphael, El Salvador, and depicted a number of bahareque-style, also spelled bajareque, dwellings with their thatched rooves, and walls of bound tree branches. The purpose of the image was to highlight the type of construction to which the insecticide malathion would be applied, in order to control mosquito populations in the region. The malathion solution was applied in a concentration of 1-gram per square meter of dwelling surface.
