Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph of a blood smear highlights the morphology of an erythrocyte, or red blood cell (RBC), that has assumed a sickled shape. This feature is characteristic of the genetic disorder known as sickle cell disease (SCD), specifically its form referred to as sickle cell anemia.
