This image depicts a close view of a Petri dish agar plate used to perform an Elek test, an in vitro immunoprecipitation (immunodiffusion) assay. This test is used to determine whether a strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae is toxigenic. Most C. diphtheriae strains in the United States that possess the tox gene do not express it and therefore do not produce diphtheria toxin. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is the only laboratory in the United States that performs the Elek test. Note the precipitin lines formed at the zones of equivalence, indicating a toxigenic strain.
