This 1977 photograph depicts former Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director William H. Foege, MD, MPH, at left, meeting with two unidentified visitors at the CDC’s Roybal Campus. Dr. Foege served as CDC Director from 1977 to 1983. He was a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Class of 1962 and Director of the Global Smallpox Eradication Program from 1970 to 1973, and played an integral role in developing strategies that led to the global eradication of smallpox.
