This historic photograph, captured on December 23, 1955, depicts a Communicable Disease Center (CDC) orientation course in session at the former Lawson General Hospital in Chamblee, Georgia. In 1946, the Office of Malaria Control in War Areas (MCWA) was reorganized as the Communicable Disease Center (CDC), which subsequently acquired much of the former Lawson General Hospital complex for its headquarters and laboratories. The former Lawson General Hospital subsequently became the CDC's Chamblee campus. Standing at the far right is Bacteriologist Elberton J. Tiffany, MD, of the CDC Laboratory Branch, who was conducting the orientation course.
