Captured in September 1956, this historic photograph shows the instructors and attendees of the Communicable Disease Center (CDC) training class entitled "Laboratory Methods in the Diagnosis of Bacterial Diseases – Part 1". The course was conducted from September 10 through September 21. Notable instructors included bacteriologist Mildred M. Galton, Chief of the Leptospirosis Research Laboratory, who is seated second from the right in the first row; Dr. Donald S. Martin, Chief of the Training Branch, who is seated at the far right in the first row; and principal instructor Elaine L. Updyke, ScD, bacteriologist in the Diagnostic Reagents Unit, Laboratory Branch, who is standing second from the left in the back row.
