Caption:
These skin lesions on the forehead of an elderly woman were due to a case of herpes zoster, and were photographed on the 21st day of the illness. Also referred to as shingles, herpes zoster is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), which remains in the nerve roots of all persons who have had chickenpox. The virus can manifest itself as skin lesions years later, which are distributed based on affected nerve distribution patterns.
