Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) scientist placing culture plates into an incubator located inside an airtight containment cabinet within the Maximum Containment Laboratory (MCL). The scientist's arm extends through an attached rubber glove, allowing the cultures to be manipulated while maintaining the integrity of the sealed containment system.
