Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Special Pathogens Branch virologist Karl M. Johnson, MD, placing an ultracentrifuge rotor into an airtight containment cabinet inside the Maximum Containment Laboratory (MCL). Dr. Johnson is wearing a positive-pressure, airtight protective suit supplied with breathable air through the attached coiled hose visible in the lower right corner.
