Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Special Pathogens Branch (SPB) virologist Karl M. Johnson, MD, working inside the Maximum Containment Laboratory (MCL). In this view, Dr. Johnson is using a microscope housed within an airtight containment cabinet, enabling specimens to be examined from outside the cabinet while maintaining the integrity of the sealed containment system.
