Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Special Pathogens Branch (SPB) pathologist James V. Lange, PhD, working inside the Maximum Containment Laboratory (MCL). In this view, Dr. Lange has inserted his right arm into the airtight containment cabinet's attached rubber glove, allowing him to operate the handle of an autoclave used to sterilize laboratory materials within the containment system.
