This historic graphic depicts a table entitled, "Calculated Doses of an Isolant of Street Rabies Virus Necessary to Kill 50% of Various Species of Wild Animals Inoculated Peripherally." The term isolant is an older microbiological term for a virus isolate. The values are expressed as MLD50 (Mouse Lethal Dose 50%), representing the quantity of a specific rabies virus isolate required to kill 50% of inoculated mice and serving as the reference dose administered to the various wildlife species. The data were compiled by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Office of Vital Statistics (NOVS). The values shown are specific to the street rabies virus isolate examined in this study.
